The Warm Hand of Friendship

We work to welcome refugees, asylum seekers and migrants who have come to Abingdon and the surrounding area. We extend the warm hand of friendship to those who are seeking sanctuary and need our support, providing practical help and connecting people with the local community.

We know that 2025 will bring further challenges: people forced to leave their homes as a result of conflict, famine, persecution or environmental degradation. Please get in touch if you would like to join us.

This is what we do

Since 2015 Host Abingdon has been raising funds for emergency accommodation, for destitute refugees and asylum seekers with our Sanctuary Fund. As of 2025, we provide accommodation for asylum seekers through the Sanctuary Fund in partnership with Asylum Welcome, and support refugees and asylum seekers living locally. In partnership with local churches we run a weekly International Welcome Café.

Host Abingdon also supported families arriving in our area under the Syrian Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme with help on accessing services such as health, benefits and education. For four years each of the families was supported by our group of experienced volunteer family support workers.

Host Abingdon has operated an extensive English teaching programme and has a network of experienced volunteer English teachers.
